Fiscal Volatility and Financial Markets
Increased uncertainty about fiscal policy, especially as it relates to capital taxation, can potentially disrupt real activity, especially through a drop in durables consumption and investment. I show that this has a negative impact on credit flows and equity valuations, puts downward pressure on fixed-income yields, yet does not stress short- and long-term lending. I relate this to the current uncertainty surrounding the US presidential election.
